Dreissenids’ breaking loose: differential attachment as a possible driver of the dominance shift between two invasive mussel species

چکیده

Abstract Ponto-Caspian dreissenids are notorious freshwater invaders. Recently, widespread observations show a dominance shift from the early invader, Dreissena polymorpha, to its successor, bugensis . These likely reflect congeneric species differences in physiological and behavioural traits. Here, we assessed mussel attachment strength, rate, mode of byssal failure as trait that could potentially contribute shifts. The traits were measured field laboratory experiments. Fouling plates deployed Rhine-Meuse river delta collected acclimatised 60 L non-aerated tanks. Attachment strength was positively correlated with shell size. D. significantly greater compared slower growing polymorpha individuals dreissenid assemblage. This corresponded superior thread morphology (i.e. higher number two times wider threads). Moreover, our results indicated threads stronger than those , latter ruptured more often. Additionally, had lower rate Having gives an advantage when it comes withstanding currents predators. A dominance shift from the zebra mussel to the invasive quagga mussel may alter the trophic transfer of metals.

Bioinvasions are a major cause of biodiversity and ecosystem changes. The rapid range expansion of the invasive quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) causing a dominance shift from zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) to quagga mussels, may alter the risk of secondary poisoning to predators. Mussel samples were collected from various water bodies in the Netherlands, divided into size ...

Insecticide-Mediated Shift in Ecological Dominance between Two Competing Species of Grain Beetles

Competition is a driving force regulating communities often considered an intermittent phenomenon, difficult to verify and potentially driven by environmental disturbances. Insecticides are agents of environmental disturbance that can potentially change ecological relationships and competitive outcomes, but this subject has seldom been examined. As the co-existing cereal grain beetle species Si...
